Note due to suspension Ali Bagautinov is ineligible for the rankings. Also the previous ranks are in parenthesis:
1) Demetrious Johnson (1)
Demetrious Johnson made history in his last outing against Kyoji Horiguchi with a last minute submission. His UFC 186 defense has again set a record in the flyweight division at six defenses, with four being finishes.
2) Joseph Benavidez (2)
At UFC 187 on May 23rd, Joseph Benavidez won his third fight in a row against the likes of John Moraga. However, at this point it’s still too soon to make a case for a third match with Demetrious Johnson.
3) John Dodson (3)
John Dodson successfully came back from an eleven month layoff against Zach Makovsky at UFC 187 in May. This latest win could possibly have earned him a title shot against Demetrious Johnson later this year.
4) Jussier da Silva (5)
Making another case for a title shot against Demetrious Johnson, Jussier da Silva recently beat Wilson Reis. This match up would make the most sense considering that Johnson’s faced the rest of the best so far.
5) Kyoji Horiguchi (9)
Kyoji Horiguchi recently lost his last outing against Demetrious Johnson in a title shot at UFC 186 in April. It still has yet to be seen if Horiguchi is a legitimate threat of if he simply faced inferior competition until this point.
6) John Lineker (6)
Following his failure to make weight at UFC 183, John Lineker will probably be moving up in weight next outing. It will be interesting to see how he fairs in his new weight class all things considered and it’s unfortunate for him.
7) Ian McCall (4)
Ian McCall will need to reassess his position in the flyweight division if he wants to continue being relevant. However, the fact that latest opponent John Lineker missed weight could make a case for cancellation in this case.
8) John Moraga (7)
After a loss to Joseph Benavidez, it can only be assumed that John Moraga will come out hungry for a win. However, like most fighters in the rankings, he’s already faced champion Demetrious Johnson.
9) Zach Makovsky (8)
Zach Makovsky may have lost to John Dodson in his return but he can rebound for a title shot with motivation. Aside from Jussier da Silva, Makovsky is the only top flyweight to never challenge Demetrious Johnson.
10) Chris Cariaso (10)
Now on a two fight loosing streak, Chris Cariaso needs to develop a good ground defense to stay relevant.
These are contenders: Wilson Reis, Justin Scoggins, Scott Jorgensen, Brad Pickett, Henry Cejudo
