Please note the rankings are voted on by a panel of MMA Freak writers and the previous rankings (8/19/14) are listed in parenthesis:
1. Jon Jones (1)
Jon Jones is on track for recovery and for his title defense in fight capitol Las Vegas on January 3rd at UFC 182 against Daniel Cormier.
2. Daniel Cormier (3)
Number one contender Daniel Cormier is continuing to train for his upcoming fight with Jon Jones for the annual new years show. His war of words with both Jones and fellow light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson has taken several twists and turns.
3. Rashad Evans (2)
Rashad Evans still has nothing scheduled despite the ten month layoff and seven month recovery from his leg injury right before UFC 170. If he doesn’t fight before November 16th then he will become ineligible for the rankings.
4. Alexander Gustafsson (4)
While he maybe upset that he won’t be getting the next title shot, Alexander Gustafsson has no choice but to accept the current situation.
5. Glover Teixeira (5)
Glover Teixeira will be facing Phil Davis at UFC 179 in his native Brazil on October 25th in order to get back on the winning track. This goes both ways as Davis is coming off a loss to Anthony Johnson and both men need a win to get back into title contention and relevance.
6. Anthony Johnson (6)
In the witch hunt that has been prevalent in professional sports in regards to domestic violence, Anthony Johnson is currently suspended. It would be a shame if this turns out to be true as Johnson exploded back into the UFC and is definitely a talented athlete overall.
7. Dan Henderson (7)
Dan Henderson currently has nothing scheduled but the comment that he’ll go back down to middleweight makes the most sense.
8. Phil Davis (8)
After loosing to Anthony Johnson the way he was, Phil Davis is looking for a rebound win against Glover Teixeira. He will have a slight disadvantage in that he will be fighting on Teixeira’s home country, but he did defeat Lyoto Machida under similar circumstances.
9. Emanuel Newton (9)
Emanuel Newton has clearly developed the spinning back fist as his trademark knockout as he used it on Joey Beltran at Bellator 124. It will be interesting to see who will emerge as the next contender, but considering Beltran had one win, anyone could fill this position easily.
10. Ryan Bader (10)
Considering that Ryan Bader was able to pull off an impressive win over Ovince St. Preux, he deserves the current time off.
