The flyweight champion is at it again after successfully defending his title less than a month ago on Fox against John Dodson. Demetrious Johnson (5-1-1 UFC) will defend his championship against John Moraga (2-0 UFC) on April 13th at the TUF 17 Finale in Las Vegas. “DJ” is considered the best at flyweight and is always looking for the next challenge, and he has found it in Moraga.

Some still believe that Joseph Benavidez is the number one contender, but he didn’t want the fight. I respect that he understands that he will only get one rematch and that he is taking his time learning from his mistakes. Benavidez beat McCall recently, but I don’t think he won a unanimous decision, so taking another fight wouldn’t hurt. I would love to see the Benavidez/Dodson fight.

Meanwhile, Moraga isn’t shy and when offered a flyweight title shot, he jumped all over the opportunity. Moraga is 12-1 in mma with his only loss coming via unanimous decision in 2010 to John Dodson.

Moraga has compiled a record of 7-0 since the loss with 5 finishes. Moraga made his UFC debut back in August when he defeated Ulysses Gomez via KO in the first round. His second stint in the UFC wouldn’t be as easy, but would obviously earn him a title shot. Moraga stepped up against top flyweight contender Chris Cariaso and some believe he was losing the fight until his was able to capitalize and win via submission (guillotine choke) in the third round.

~ Final Thought ~

There still isn’t a ton of flyweight competition in the UFC, so why not give it to a guy who has won two in a row in the UFC? Moraga is on a 7 fight win streak and has the tools to upset the champ. “DJ” is no joke and so fast, so this should be a great fight.
