With Scotland set to host it’s first UFC event on Saturday July 18th , things are shaping up just nicely for a potential title fight in Glasgow’s SSE Hydro Arena between the strawweight divisions two undefeated Muay Thai specialists; newly crowned Polish sensation Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Scotland’s own title contender Joanne Calderwood.
Fans are already calling for this match up in Glasgow with Calderwood suggesting her Twitter account “exploded” after Jedrzejczyk’s recent victory over Carla Esparza at UFC 185. Jedrzejczyk appears to be open minded about fighting in Scotland and recently stated “It doesn’t matter” when asked where she would prefer to defend the belt.
Ironically, Calderwood is scheduled to fight Maryna Moroz on April 11th in Krakow, Poland, with Joanna certain to be ringside to run the rule over her potential next opponent. Scotland now has a fairly large Polish community and being only a short flight from Poland having the title fight in Glasgow bewtween their two European superstars is too good an opportunity for the UFC matchmakers to miss. Scottish MMA fans have already pre ordered tickets in their thousands and if the headline bout turns out to be Calderwood’s title shot the UFC can be assured that Fight Night Glasgow will sell out in a heart beat.
The UFC do want to push their brand far and wide in 2015 and having a title fight outwith the Americas is seen as a critical part of their marketing strategy. If this fight transpires it would be another real coup for Scotland having played host to a number of high profile events in the past 12 months such as the Ryder Cup, MTV European Video Awards and a hugely successful Commonwealth Games.
But let’s not forget that all of this now depends on the outcome of Joanne’s fight with Moroz on April 11th.
