October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it’s the time to celebrate the research done to combat the one of the most common forms of cancer in the world.
For the occasion, MMA Freak is celebrating by compiling a list of the Top 10 Women Fighters in MMA. This list is ranked based on various criteria such as significance in MMA history and significance in the modern era.
Please note that this list is subjective, with that said here are the top 10 fighters:
10) Barb Honchak
While she hasn’t fought in two years, Barb Honchak did elevate the height of the women’s flyweight class.
9) Michelle Waterson
Michelle Waterson has gained some mainstream exposure because of her sex appeal and will fight again soon.
8) Gina Carano
The former face of women’s MMA, Gina Carano is still fresh in the memories of many as she brought women’s MMA to the mainstream. While she is busy with various projects in Hollywood, rumors of her return still circulate.
7) Amanda Nunes
Amanda Nunes makes this list as the current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion and faces Ronda Rousey in her first title defense. This may in fact be another passing of the torch of the true return of “Rowdy”.
6) Holly Holm
Despite the fact that Holly Holm has suffered back to back losses, her boxing pedigree helped advance the sport.
5) Miesha Tate
Miesha Tate is a longtime veteran who has helped the sport with such deeds as helping a six year old girl down a mountain when she broke her arm to saving her boyfriend’s mom’s life. Her heart backs her in cage skills.
4) Joanna Jedrzejczyk
The undefeated UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is arguably one of the best in ring technicians currently active in the sport today. It’s primarily been under her reign that the division has thrived.
3) Paige VanZant
Paige VanZant has both good looks and the skills to back up her mainstream hype. She is without a doubt a gifted athlete as demonstrated by her recent switch kick victory against Bec Rawlings. Add her Dancing with the Stars performance and the sky is the limit for the Twelve Gage beauty.
2) Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino
One of the biggest names in the sport ever, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino is only now in the UFC after years outside.
1) Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey along with Gina Carano brought women’s MMA from a freak show spectacle to a mainstream sport.
