Note due to inactivity, Chan Sung Jung is currently ineligible for the rankings. Also note the previous rankings (8/14/14) in parenthesis:

1. Jose Aldo (1)

Jose Aldo is currently on course for his UFC 179 title defense and rematch against Chad Mendes after an injury which delayed their meeting. His previous injury forced the cancellation of UFC 176, but he is on track to show up for UFC 179 healthy and ready for fight.

2. Chad Mendes (2)

An injury to Jose Aldo forced Chad Mendes to wait as well as the cancellation of UFC 176, but now everything is on course for October 25th. UFC 179 is set to be a good fight card and there’s no doubt that Mendes is probably motivated by teammate TJ Dillashaw‘s success.

3. Ricardo Lamas (3)

Ricardo Lamas will be facing the up and coming Dennis Bermudez at UFC 180, the first event in Mexico City this coming November 15th. Lamas is probably honored to be able to fight in the land of his ancestors in what is no doubt a historic fight card in MMA and the UFC.

4. Cub Swanson (4)

Riding a six fight winning streak, Cub Swanson could be fighting for a title shot next, though when that will be is uncertain at present.

5. Frankie Edgar (5)

Frankie Edgar still doesn’t have anything scheduled and may not before the end of the year, but his win over BJ Penn is still legitimate.

6. Nik Lentz (6)

Unfortunately for Nik Lentz, would be opponent Charles Oliveira first failed to make weight and then came down with something.

7. Dustin Poirier (7)

Dustin Poirier will face Conor McGregor at UFC 178 on September 27th. Poirier’s faced stiffer competition in the past, but McGregor can’t be taken lightly. However, a win over the UFC’s latest trash talker can give Poirier some mainstream exposure without a doubt.

8. Dennis Bermudez (N/A)

A win against Ricardo Lamas on November 15th at UFC 180 may very well propel Dennis Bermudez into legitimate title contention. This can be the case considering Bermudez is on a seven fight winning streak and an eighth win can only help him.

9. Jeremy Stephens (9)

Though he is coming off of a loss, Jeremy Stephens recent bout with Cub Swanson was a Fight of the Night and can’t be underrated.

10. Patricio Freire (N/A)

Patricio Freire recently avenged his loss to Pat Curran by soundly defeating him and taking the Bellator Featherweight Championship.

The following fighters received votes and are considered contenders in the featherweight division: Clay Guida and Conor McGregor.
