Due to inactivity TJ Grant and Anthony Pettis are ineligible. Also due to a rare tie there are eleven in the rankings. 8/31/14 in parenthesis:

1) Gilbert Melendez (2)

Like future opponent Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez will become ineligible for the rankings before their coaches match in December. However, we will still get to see him coaching on The Ultimate Fighter as he continues to seek his team’s first win in the competition.

2) Khabib Nurmagomedov (3)

Khabib Nurmagomedov is still out with a knee injury which is unfortunate considering he was in title contention prior to the injury.

3) Benson Henderson (4)

Though many have counted him out since his loss to Rafael dos Anjos, Benson Henderson is still among the elite of the UFC lightweights. While it maybe a while before he fights for the title again, he can still win against some of the best in the division.

4) Donald Cerrone (5)

Donald Cerrone was certainly at the top of his game at UFC 178 when he came from behind to kick out and defeat Eddie Alvarez.

5) Josh Thomson (6)

A two fight loosing streak puts Josh Thomson in a must win situation for his next outing, against whomever that might be in the future.

6) Bobby Green (9)

Bobby Green is set to face Edson Barboza at the upcoming UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Swanson on this coming November 22nd. Green is without a doubt on a roll, but in order to continue rising he needs to defeat the extremely tricky Barboza to finish off his good year of 2014.

7) Rafael dos Anjos (7)

Riding a high after knocking out Benson Henderson, Rafael dos Anjos is now set to face Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 13 on December 13.

8) Eddie Alvarez (8)

Eddie Alvarez started strong against Donald Cerrone at UFC 178, but found that kicks can be brutal when landed constantly. Despite this loss Alvarez made a statement to all the lightweights in the UFC that he’s finally here.

9) Jim Miller (N/A)

Jim Miller has nothing scheduled but he should still be considered a contender in the division despite his loss to Donald Cerrone.

10) (tied) Will Brooks (N/A)

In order to upgrade himself from interim to undisputed champion, Will Brooks has to face Michael Chandler again at Bellator 131.

10) (tied) Myles Jury (N/A)

Myles Jury has been on a role and is currently undefeated, recently defeating the only Pride FC Lightweight Champion Takanori Gomi.

The following fighters are considered contenders in the lightweight division: Nate Diaz, Michael Johnson, Michael Chandler.
