Former Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren signed with ONE FC to be their big name-draw, and to receive an immediate title shot.

Askren made the announcement Thursday on MMAjunkie Radio that he will make his promotional debut in May, and he’ll be fighting for the ONE FC welterweight title.

Askren will fight the winner of next month’s ONE FC title fight between former UFC fighter Brock Larson and Nobutatsu Suzuki. That fight will take place at “ONE FC 14: War of Nations” on March 14 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Askren is one of the top welterweights in the world and is expected to make a huge splash in the ONE FC. What a better way to promote him than by giving him the next title shot at welterweight? An exact date for the event, which is expected to be ONE FC 15, has not yet been announced.

In an official release, the promotion said the event will take place at Singapore Indoor Stadium, a 15,000-seat venue in Kallang, Singapore. This venue has been home to four previous ONE FC events in the past.

~ Final Thoughts ~

Askren is still a big deal in the world of mma. He is a great wrestler and a star welterweight. The big problem is, he isn’t a big draw. He isn’t shy at admitting he is going to hold you down and beat you up. Fans like watching great performances, but how much longer will Askren’s “boring” style keep the ONE FC”s fans coming back?

Will he finish you? Probably not. Will he beat you down in a one-sided war and belittle you the whole time by showing how dominate his wrestling is? Yeah that sounds about right.

Askren is without a doubt the best wrestler the ONE FC has and definitely deserves the immediate title shot. The talent pool is slim, so I don’t see why they would make him fight some low level guys first. This first fight has some good implications.

If Askren comes in here like Jon Fitch did in the WSOF and get ran over, then what? Askren is the type of fighter that needs to lose to be humbled. Will it happen in the ONE FC, and/or on his debut?
