After his dominate performance last night over top contender Jussier Formiga at UFC Fight Night 28, I think it’s pretty clear it’s time for the anticipated Demetrious Johnson/Joseph Benavidez rematch. Ever since Benavidez lost a close split decision to Johnson for the inaugural UFC flyweight championship a year ago, the Team Alpha male prospect has improved his game with the help of Duane “Bang” Ludwig and has been on a tear.

He has defeated Ian McCall and has finished Darren Uyenoyama and Jussier Formiga. His striking looks more crisp than ever, and we all know he can wrestle with the best of them.

Benavidez should not have to go through what fellow teammate Chad Mendes is going through, and that’s a log jam. The featherweight division is jammed up, but the flyweight division is wide open. I respect Benavidez saying he’s not one to “bark” for a title shot, but he knows just as well as all of us, that there is no other dogs in the yard with a bark like his.

There is no one left for him besides the Johnson rematch. Benavidez’s game is more solid than ever and will give DJ a run for his money. Look how close the first fight was. Johnson’s skills have improved as well, and there is no one that matches up with him besides Benavidez. This fight needs to happen, and I expect it to be next for both parties.
